Pettigo
CHURCH OF IRELAND Graveyard.

Contributed by John Cunningham
Inscription on Pettigo War of Independence Memorial.
(located on a statue, Main St., Pettigo)
Pettigo Church of Ireland.

Pettigo Church of Ireland was built in 1838. The congregation formerly worshipped at church in Came Graveyard. There is a plaque in the church to the father of John Kells Ingram the writer of "Who Fears to Speak of "98" as well as members of the local gentry, the Bartons. Pettigo Church of Ireland"s most famous minister was the Rev. Philip Skelton who ministered here in the 1760"s. He was a good man if enviably eccentric. He was a scholar yet sold his books on two occasions in his life to provide for the needs of the local starving. When he ministered here in the 1760s he considered the locals of Pettigo to have as little knowledge of their religion "as the Indians of America" and began a series of "examination services" where he would question his congregation. The congregation of course soon dwindled on the appointed Sundays whereupon he used to ambush them by locking the doors before testing their knowledge. He was given to a melancholy which led him to think he was dying. So many of these emergencies came and went that one parishioner was heard to say that he wished he would "make a day and stick to it."

John Kells Ingram (Who Fears to Speak of "98)

John Kells Ingram.(1823 - 1907) scholar and poet was born on July 7th, 1823, in the Church of Ireland rectory, Aghnahoo, Pettigo, Co. Donegal. His father was curate of Templecarne Parish. He was educated at Dr Lyons"s school, Newry, and Trinity College Dublin. He became a fellow of the college 1846, and remained associated with it for fifty-five years, as professor of oratory 1852-66, professor of Greek 1866-77, librarian 1879-87, senior lecturer 1887, and finally as vice-provost 1898-99. His intellectual energy ranged over mathematics, classics, poetry, religious speculation, and economics, but he is best remembered for his poem "The Memory of the Dead" ("Who fears to speak of ninety-eight?"), written when he was nineteen and published anonymously in the Nation in April 1843. His authorship was an open secret in Dublin, but despite this poem Ingram showed no nationalist sympathies at any time, maintaining that Ireland was not ready for self-government.

He published many studies in economics, sociology, and religion, the most important being History of Political Economy (1888), which was translated into eight languages. In 1873 he founded and edited Hermathena, a series of papers on science, philosophy and literature by members of Trinity College Dublin. He helped to found Dublin Statistical Society 1847 and was president from 1878-1900. He was president of the Royal Irish Academy from 1892-96. He died at his home at 38 Upper Mount Street, on 1 May 1907 and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin. His portrait was painted by Sarah Purser. His writings were:- Considerations on the State of Ireland, History of Political Economy, A History of Slavery and Serfdom, Love and Sorrow, Outlines of the History of Religion, Sonnets and other Poems, Human Nature and Morals According to Auguste Comte, Practical Morals, A Treatise on Universal Education, and The Final Transition, A Sociological Study. But above all the rest of his writings John Kells Ingram is remembered in Ireland for his quickly dashed off poem:-

Memory Of The Dead, The
John Kells Ingram

Who fears to speak of Ninety-Eight?
Who blushes at the name?
When cowards mock the patriot's fate.
Who hangs his head for shame?
He's all a knave or half a slave.
Who slights his country thus
But a true man, like you man,
Will fill your glass with us.

We drink the memory of the brave,
The faithful and the few -
Some lie far off beyond the wave.
Some sleep in Ireland, too;
All, all are gone - but still - lives on
The fame of those who died;
All true men, like you, men.
Remember them with pride.

Some on the shores of distant lands
Their weary hearts have laid,
And by the stranger's heedless hands
Their lonely graves were made.
But, though their clay be far away
Beyond the Atlantic foam,
In true men, like you men,
Their spirits' still at home.

The dust of some is Irish earth
Among their own they rest;
And the same land that gave them birth
Has caught them to her breast;
And we will pray that from their clay
Full many a race may start
Of true men, like you men,
To act as brave a part.

They rose in dark and evil days
To right their native Iand;
They kindled here a living blaze.
That nothing shall withstand.
Alas! that Might can vanquish Right -
They fell and passed away;
But true men, like you men,
Are plenty here today.

Then here's their memory - may it be
For us a guiding light
To cheer our strife for liberty,
And teach us to unite!
Through good and ill be Ireland's still,
Though sad as their's your fate;
And true men, be you, men,
Like those of Ninety-Eight.
