Surname:

Nifty database by Sean Ruad and Ed Finn to help you identify where a particular townland is located and if there are more than one with that name. I found my townland in three different counties and four civil parishes, so had to expand the search for my elusive ancestors.

Try entering the townland in the first field and leaving the others blank, see what comes up!

Surname:

Hi, in 1876, James' property was valued at 185 pounds 15 shillings, and John's property was valued at 22 pounds 10 shillings.

The LDS (Mormon) Family History Center has a wonderful microfiched IGI Index for Ireland, (mostly civil registration for the 1860s, but other dates) and you should be able to find several references to your surnames. The FHCs are free and open to the general public, located in most towns in the USA and some elsewhere. The fiche are usually kept in catalogue card type drawers under "British Isles." There are 1-4 little black squares of fiche for each county in Ireland. Be sure and have the FHC volunteer place the largest magnifying lens into the microfiche reader for easy viewing; you can make copies right at the machine with the touch of a button! While you are there, check their FHC Catalogue diskettes for other resources they have on microfilm for Co. Antrim.

Belfast Harp Society - 1808

Posted by Jean Rice <jeanrice@cet.com> on Sat, 28 Aug 1999

Surname: MacDonnell, Bunting, O'Neill, Neilson, Nelson, Sloane, Wallace, McEwan

Per genealogy library reference book, ever since the Belfast Harpers' Festival of 1792, there had been a continuing interest in traditional music and, after a meeting in Linn's Hotel in Castle Street on St. Patrick's Day, 1808, it was decided to establish an Irish Harp Society. The aims of the society were "to provide blind boys and girls with the means of earning a living by teaching them the harp," and "to provide for the study of the Irish language, history and antiquities."

The inspiration for the society came from Dr. James MacDonnell, the best-known physician in the town, and Edward Bunting who, in 1796, had published his first edition of the "Ancient Music of Ireland."

They secured patronage of the Marquis of Donegall, collected 284 guineas in the first year and employed Arthur O'Neill, Ulster's most skilled harper, as tutor. Pupils came from every part of the province, and they were housed, clothed and fed as well as taught. This was a costly operation, for the Harp Society also conducted an Irish language school in Pittinger's Entry, and in 1811 financial difficulties forced them to abandon the enterprise.

In that same year William Neilson (well-known family of Rademon and Down: educators and Gaelic scholars) came to Belfast and almost immediately began to participate in the cultural life of the town. He brought new life to the small group dedicated to Celtic Studies, and it was he who suggested that an appeal should be made to Irish officers serving in the British Army in India to help the Harp Society out of its financial difficulties. The officers responded generously, and a fund, known as the Bengal Subscription, was established under the patronage of the Marquis of Hastings, Governor General of India, the Marquis of Downshire and the Earl of Belfast, and soon raised over 1,000 pounds. This generous subscription enabled the Harp Society to revive; a house was taken in Cromac Street, tutors were appointed and six students enrolled.

Unfortunately, William Neilson did not live to see many of his achievements. In 1820, he was invited to accept the chair of Greek in his old university of Glasgow, but before he could take up duty he died of rheumatic fever on April 16, 1821, at the age of only 45.

Neilson's funeral from Belfast to Rademon Non-Subscribing Presbyterian graveyard was one of the great events of the 1820s, said to have been attended by 15,000 people of all creeds and classes. The funeral oration was given by his close friend, Rev. William McEwan, a native of Killinchy, who paid tribute to Neilson's unswerving liberal principles.

William Neilson appears to have been survived by a son and two daughters. The son, named after his father, founded the firm of William Neilson and Son, solicitors, Abbey Street, Dublin, which continued in business for many years. Daughter, Catherine, married Samuel Hans Sloane, who was for a time minister at Holywood before transferring to Princes Street, Cork, from which he resigned in 1844. Daughter, Mary, married John Wallace, a Belfast attorney and brother of Hugh Wallace of Downpatrick.

Family-connected members are also buried in the Nelson vault in Downpatrick Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Graveyard.

Letter regarding Ulster families of Phillips, Singer, McApese

Posted by Jean Rice <jeanrice@cet.com> on Tue, 27 Jul 1999

Surname: Phillips, Singer, McApese

On March 12, 1819, a letter was written by John Phillips, Winnsborough, Fairfield District, South Carolina, (originally from Lisburn), to his brother James Phillips, Derriaghy, in care of Mr. Edward Phillips, Lisburn, Co. Antrim. He was staying with another family of Phillips in S.C. It is interesting and descriptive of his experience as an immigrant to the United States even though it was not perfectly composed:

Dear Brother,

Being anxious to know how you are, I take the liberty of sending you these few lines hoping that they may find not only you but also my Father and Mother and every member of our family in good health and spirits, such as I now perfectly enjoy indeed I have been very well since I left Ireland except sea sickness and that was of short duration, being only half an hour during the whole voyage. At that time we were in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean running at the rate of 10 miles an hour with double reefed topsails, which were torn to pieces notwithstanding we had a good passage, being only six weeks from we left Ireland to we got a view of our destined shore. There was nothing happened during the voyage worthy of communication so I have only to relate what happened after I landed. It being far in the day when we got on shore. I spent the remainder in taking a view of the town, which is the most considerable in South Carolina and is a pretty well-built town. The public buildings are an exchange storehouse, armoury, poor house, to large churches for Episcopalins, two for Congregationalists or Independents, one for Scotch Presbyterians, one for Baptists, one for German Lutherns, two for the Methodists, one for French Protestants, besides a meeting houose for Quakers, a Roman Catholick chapel and a Jewish synagogue, which are all well-finished elegant houses. The streets are wide and sandy, the people are clearly in their persons affable and very polite indeed to much so in many respects. They have too much of the politeness of the French people.

I had not been walking long to I met a very respectable gentleman who asked me if I was not one of the passengers. I told him I was; what part did I come from? - Lisburn. When we entered into conversation in the course of which he asked me if I knew Mrs. Singer. I told him I did perfectly. He told me he was her brother John, so I give him his letter. Then he took me with him to dinner, where I drank some of the most excellent spirit I ever tasted, during which he said the letter given me an excellent advice and promised to look for a place for me. Mr. Blackwood is a very respectable man and an extensive merchant. He intends to visit Ireland this summer which you must let Mrs. Singer know. It was near dark when I parted with Mr. Blackwood. Returning down street I met James Coburn and Robert, who was glad to see me. After taking a drink of ale I returned to the ship.

The next day was nearly spent in getting our chests landed. A Mr. Gray, the gentleman that Robert Coburn keeps store for, went to the Custom house with us, where we had to swear that what we had was our own person property, so we got a permit for which we paid half a dollar. I put my chest in Mr. Gray's store and dined with him that day. I stayed at a Mr. Steel's in that night, where I met with a country gentleman who told me they were very ill for a school master in there settlement and wished me to go with him, telling me that I would have 300 dollars or 70 pounds per year compound to me and that he would carry me to the place, which was 160 miles above Charlestown, and if the place would happen to be engaged he would not let me be at any expense to. I happened to get a place suitable for my inclination. So I started off with this man the next day and encamped successively in the wood for four or five nights.

When we got up so far as Jackson Creek, I met a Mr. David Phillips, son to Captain James Phillips, who is brother to the old Colonel. This young gentleman pressed me very much to go and see his father, but I did not like to stop to I had seen whether the school was engaged or not, but I had only teen miles further to go so that I could see him in time. However my haste did not avail. The school was engaged, but I was pretty safe, being carried 160 miles into a healthy part of the country without any expense.

After I hd spent a few days, I returned to see Mr. Phillips, who gave me a most agreeable reception and told me to make his home my home to I would get business. This old man has a large plantation but lives retired and independent. He has 5 sons, 4 of them are married and have plantations of their own. One of them is an adjutant in militia. I stopped too weeks with the old man very happily as he is so agreeable, his memory so good, and having seen so much of the world that his company cannot fail of being interesting though he is 70 years of age. He relates all his youthful exploits with the spriiteliness of youth and that dignity of manner which can only be acquired by frequenting the best company. I have begun to work with one of his sons at the carpenter business. We are building a Methodist preaching house of timber, which is a framed work shuttered over we have 700 dollars for it we have only to put up the outside and gallery and floor. We get the planks at the saw mill for a dollar and a half per 110 feet, the rest of the timber for the cutting down. I have had a job at sawing the stuff for our frame so that I can now use the framed saw completely, cannot tell you what wages I will make yet as I get a share of the profits, but carpenter's wages are from one dollar and a half to two dollars per day. Bricklayers ad stonemasons are the same. Plasteres or painters - can almost make as much as they please, a labouring man will get 200 dollars and sometimes his diet per yer. A blacksmith who will work will make at leat 400 dollars per year. Schoolmasters get pretty good wages. I have been offered 50 pounds per year three or four tmes with my diet, but a person who is able to buy a piece of land, he will get it for dollars per acre for ever, he can make more that trademan can do. A man who can set up a small store in the country is superior to any other. He will have nothing but what he will have 30% at least or more.

The natural produce of the place where I have stopped is walnuts, pine, and locusts on these lands are cultivated. There is principally wheat - ryce - barley - oats, the three last of which they sow for pasturage as the land does not produce grass of any consequence in this State - peaches and apples are a-plenty in this settlement. Mellons especially the water Mellon are very plenty, and grapes are plenty in the woods in summer.

I have little more to communicate only I am at work every day. My master is a good undertaker, gives me every instructions. Besides I am making money plenty, in short I live as well as a man can wish. When I wish to go to any house of worship or any other place there is a horse to ride when I please; though my master has a numerous family it is a most agreeable one composed of 9 boys and 1 girl who is most amiable tell Sarah McApese will meet a good reception here. Let me know every particular and write as soon as you receive this. I remain your affectionate Brother, JOHN PHILLIPS.
